About Doubt

'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.' (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Doubt is debilitating. Nowhere does doubt reek more havoc than in our relationship with God. The smallest shred of doubt can lead to enormous failure. Thus, we are told to trust the Lord with all our heart. That is to say that we are to have complete confidence in Him. 'With all your heart' biblically means with every fiber of your being. There should be no part of you that doubts God in any way. When doubt begins to creep in my life, I try to remind myself that God has never, ever given me, or anyone else, a reason to doubt Him.

We are then told not to lean on our own understanding simply because we don't really understand much at all. If we were to actually be able to see how little we truly understand, it would be comical. As a matter of fact, the older I get, the more I realize just how little I know and understand. It is when I begin to think that I know best that I go astray. Take it from me, that is an extremely dangerous place to find yourself.

We end in verse 6 by learning an invaluable lesson. As we live life, making dozens of decisions in a single day, we must constantly be in tune with God. As we are in tune with God and His will, He will direct our lives. This is a wonderful benefit of being indwelled by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is constantly guiding our lives as we are walking daily under His direction. The more I lean on the Lord, the more the Spirit is in control of my ways. It is when I am leaning on my own knowledge, that I quench the Spirit.

May all of us be totally dependent not he Lord to guide our steps as we walk in unison with His will in our lives.
