This Means War: V

The Belt of Truth

We now come to the actual armor in which God is instructing us to put on. Let me say again, every piece of this armor is vital to us winning the spiritual battle. Note the very first piece of armor that we are commanded to put on.

"Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth..." - Ephesians 6:14a

In this day, soldiers would wear long-flowing robes. Those robes had the tendency to become cumbersome during activity. We know that hand-to-hand combat, which was the way most of the battle was fought, was impossible with the long-flowing robe. Therefore, they would wrap around their waist a belt that would allow them to be able to move freely during battle.

The 'truth' spoken about here has had several different interpretations. What follows in my interpretation, after much study, of what I believe this means.

One of the greatest hindrances that the devil uses in the false idea that there is no absolute truth. This is especially true in the day in which we live. We live in a society that believes in relative truths. In other words, what is truth is truth to you, and what is truth to me is my truth. For example, if you think there is nothing wrong with abortion, relative truth says that's okay because that's what you believe. The idea of having no absolute truths leaves us to our own devices, which as the Bible and history tells us, never ends well.

It is my belief, however, that we are to gird ourselves with the absolute truths that God has given us through His Word. There are principles and precepts that should guide and guard our lives. It is God's truth that initiates our decisions and movements in this world. There are truths given to us by God that helps us know when we are under the attack of the devil.

Jesus says in John 8:44, "You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there inso truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies." The devil longs for us to believe his lies. This is why it is imperative that we faster ourselves with the truth given to us by God. We must be on guard that we do not begin to believe the lives of the devil.

Remember, the devil is sly and will do anything he can to get a stronghold in your life. Use the absolute truths of God to combat the wicked lies of the devil.
