This Means War VI

Last post we noted the first piece of armor we are instructed to put on, and that was the belt of truth. It is essential in our fight against the devil that we are walking in the absolute truths of God. Today we look at the next piece of armor; the breastplate of righteousness.

No soldier in their right mind would step on the battlefield without their breastplate on and secured. The breastplate was the main defense for a soldier's vital organs, so too is it true in our lives with righteousness. It is imperative that we live righteous lives.

Let me preface this point by exhorting you to not be self-righteous. Too often Christians are characterized by self-righteousness. Self-righteousness is when one thinks they are righteous in and of themselves. These are those that are always looking down their noses at someone else for what they are doing. Also, what typically partners with self-righteousness is pride. When you think you are righteous because of yourself, then you will inevitably be engulfed with pride. There is not a single person walking the face of the Earth that has within them self-sustaining righteousness. The only righteousness we have has been given to us by God.

So, what is this breastplate of righteousness? To put it simply, it is living out the righteousness that is given to us by God. If we are going to live righteous lives, then it is only going to happen when the righteousness of God lives through us. The breastplate is to live a holy life. God said in Leviticus 20:7, "Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God."

The best news is that it is impossible to do so on our own. There is no way that we can live this holy life. Is God's Word instructing us to do something that is impossible? Is God's Word setting us up for failure? NO, because we have the Holy Spirit directing our lives. The only way that we can live a holy life is through the Holy Spirit. He is the One that guides and directs our steps. Without Him we could never live in a holy manner, but because He has indwelled the believer, we can live a life that is holy before the Lord.

It is not a hard task to discern the Spirit of God. Most of the time it is as though He is screaming directions to us. He makes it loud and clear what He wants done in our lives. It is then our responsibility to be obedient to the movement of the Spirit in our lives. Be careful to listen for the commands of the Spirit. He will never, ever steer you in the wrong direction.
