In this the 9th installment of this series, we will focus our attention on Ephesians 6:16.
"In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one."
Today we take a look at the shield of faith. For the soldier in combat, the shield was an imperative piece of the armor. It was that piece that could fend off the sword, spear, or arrow of the enemy. It was needed at all times in all battles.
I find it interesting that Paul begins the verse by imploring us to take up this shield of faith in all circumstances. Undoubtedly Paul had been through many circumstances in which only his faith got him through. Such is the case in the fight against the devil. In this war, there are many times when we begin to wonder if the war is worth the pain. There are many times in this war when we feel like all hope is gone, and we are all alone. Thus Paul reminds us that we must rely upon faith.
Faith is defined as complete trust or confidence in someone or something. It is faith that is the most basic of all Christian principles. It is by faith that we trust in Christ to save us from our sins and the just penalty of them. It is by faith that we are born again. And though our Christian experience begins with faith, there is never a time in which we are to not continue in that faith. What we learn about faith is that the longer we trust Christ, the more our faith expands. It is in the dark days of life that our faith is increased the most. It is in the midst of the war that is raging in your life that God shows up, gets you through, and in return your faith is immensely increased.
The devil longs for your faith to dwindle into nothing. He wants nothing more than for your trust and confidence in God to waver. He knows that if he can get you to waver in your faith in God, then he has you right where he wants you. It is our faith, however, in God that extinguishes those attacks of the devil. It is our faith in God that makes us confident that God will see us through no matter how tough the battle. It is our faith in God that motivates us to keep on fighting the good fight. It is our faith in God that drives us to never, ever give up or give in. It is that faith that the devil cannot break through.
This life we live as believers is lived by faith. I leave you with Paul's words in Galatians 2:20.
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
